How do I install trailer wiring on my Hyundai Elantra 2006 (4-dr hatchback)?
I’ve bought a "universal" trailer light kit (two magnetic lamps and the associated wiring), but it comes with almost no directions. The Elantra has separate brake and direction lights. On each side of the rear in the trunk is a small black plastic grille which, when removed, reveals a black cable plugging into the light array. The plug is a white plastic 4-terminal array (the terminals aren’t round, in case you’re thinking "slam dunk – it’s a trailer wiring plug"). In the cable on the left hand side there are four wires: black, white, yellow, and yellow w/ a red line. In the cable on the right hand side are four wires: black, white, brown, blue.

Any inspired suggestions as to where I should go from here?

You’re going to pull a trailer with an Elantra? Good luck with that.

Since the Elantra is front wheel drive.. are you sure you want to pull a trailer? If you do, be ready to replace the front end joints as pulling a trailer will do harm/damage to them. If you are not going to pull a trailer, why do you need the light kit?

The wiring harness you need has plugs so you can disconnect the existing plugs behind tail light and connect inbetween those; the trailer light connector. do not start cutting wires or splicing into system..bad idea. U-Haul trailer places will have what you need including installation if you wish..
good luck..
