Besides leather, what I found out last week was thermal long johns, a sweatshirt and my carrhart coat worked just fine.

Hope it works tomorrow as well :)

I have a nice Cortech jacket with a full-size quilted liner that works very well, and some Fieldsheer overpants that also have a quilted liner (that I don't need). The idea is to keep the wind OUT and keep some warmth IN, and it doesn't take heavy insulation to do so.

If you want to be hardcore, Gerbings makes an entire line of heated clothing to use under your leathers. A bit overkill in my opinion, but I don't ride if it's under 25*F anyway.

Can't say it's the best, but my choice is a Firstgear Kilimanjaro jacket with a Gerbing heated liner & gloves. For pants, I typically go with Joe Rocket Ballistic on the outside, layered with fleece overpants underneath and long johns.

Also, it doesn't need to be below freezing for a heated liner to really make a difference. Riding all day in 50 degree weather can really take a toll on you as the hours rack up – if you're not careful hypothermia is not at all out of the question (been there, done that).

Gerbing heated liners and clothing are the warmest. You basically plug your clothes into your bike's battery. This is the stuff police wear when they have to ride during a blizzard.

Other than leather? Leather really isn't that good of an insulator. There are plenty of options, several brands have been mentioned already. And the electrically heated stuff is great.

When layering up be sure you can still move. You don't want to restrict blood flow, blood flow keeps your body heated. Wearing a bunch of bulky stuff isn't going to do your riding skills any favors either.

I own a few pieces of clothing made by an outfit called Under Armour. The Cold Gear stuff is incredible! Does a great job of wicking moisture away from your body, very warm, and not bulky at all.
